What is this?

As the title really, these things are at the end of a variety of charger and power leads for various electronic devices (this one is on my laptop charger) and I'm curious as to what they are and what they do?

(The little nicks are where my cats been tasting the cable BTW!)

The 'lump' contains a ferrite bead fed over the cable. This inductance is supposed to block electromagnetic interference travelling along the cable either from the environment or from the device it is connected to.
