What range of resistance

Hi, for a certain application, I will have a variable resistor between some headphones and a normal headphone output. My question is what resistance range should it be for a good volume control that starts at zero.

This may not be a good idea if the amplifier is fussy about the impedance of the load ( the speaker ) it is driving and the head phones are low impedance ones.

To get a total zero volume you will need to connect it as a potentiometer.

I have very little idea what you mean, but i mean a regular headphone output like an mp3 player. It would go between the ground, so that it controls both channels.

You would also need a logarithmic scale pot.

You need a dual gang log pot and a small enclosure, a soldering iron, solder, screened cable tools etc.

In the schematic, the ground from the input goes to the "ground" , is that necessary?

Edit - Is the ground on the right ground out?


Also, why are the other ends of the variable resistors connected to ground - is that so zero volume can be achieved?

I'd start with a value of 10k and see how it went.

The ground connection just means it's a common connection and when it's all soldered together and a 3.5mm jack plug fitted and your screened cable soldered to the correct terminal in the plug it will be connected to chassis (ground, earth, 0v etc..)

There are devices that are designed to work without this ground wire continuity but thats another story in this case it's needed

But you don't need to fit an earth spike if that's what you mean.
