A half inch Whitworth spanner is actually a 23/25 inch spanner in reality! Bonkers system IMHO!

He's fixed it now. Perhaps he used a ring spanner on the pipe?

Perhaps he used a tape meaure or ruler

Nobody in the trade I’m in would call that an “half inch spanner”. 1/2” A/F spanner is (almost) the imperial equivalent of a modern 13mm one.
A 1/2 UNF is 3/4” AF.
