What to paint damaged kitchen door with to avoid swelling?

Hi guys, Ive just fitted a new integrated dishwasher and the door got badly damaged in the process!

I know these have a tendency to swell and wondered if anyone had any tips to try and help to avoid this?

I had considered pva but would rather ask the experts first.

Foil tape , physical barrier which won’t break down and unaffected by heat or moisture.
