What to paint damaged kitchen door with to avoid swelling?

Hi guys, Ive just fitted a new integrated dishwasher and the door got badly damaged in the process!

I know these have a tendency to swell and wondered if anyone had any tips to try and help to avoid this?

I had considered pva but would rather ask the experts first.

How about cutting out some of the damaged section and fitting some iron-on kitchen edging strip?

And then maybe seal with a tiny bit of white sealant.

It would be best to prime the 'wood' with an oil-based wood primer first.
