FWIW, my absorption method of cooking rice. It works best on a gas hob:

Use basmati.

I use a standard mug, which gives enough for 3-5 people, depending upon how large or hungry they are.

Put a mug of basmati in a pan. Add a little oil. Heat the pan. When hot, add 1 1/3 mugs of boiling water. Bring to a rolling boil, then turn the gas down to the lowest setting, put the lid on and leave it for 10 mins.

The great thing about this method is that once you have turned the heat right down, you can forget about it. Even if you overshoot a little on the cooking time, it doesn't matter too much.

It doesn't matter how big the measure is either (within reason!).

As long as you have 1 of rice and 1.33333333 of boiling water, that's the key.

And if you can get the rice on the go, then fry some meat (or quorn or veg) in a pan & add a thai green curry paste and some water, you've got yourself a lovely curry in minutes.

Guess what I've talked myself into cooking tonight? ;)
