I had a look and cant see 2 speed gearbox and vari-speed listed for the cheaper one, but I could have missed it in the specifications.

I'd settle for the cheaper one, do well

The cheaper version batteries don't fit other Makita products apparently (I think this is a special version B&Q get from Makita) - check the reviews and research if this is likely to be a problem for you if using with other Makita's and you'd want to swap batteries around.

One reviewer:

Great for DIY - Pro's Beware Battery Compatibility
"As others have said - £99 for Li-On Makita is great value - buy one (or two if you do a lot of DIY, save changing bits) but if your a pro and use other Makita products I'd spend more on the LXT for battery compatibility.
The battery doesn't fit other Makita products which is a problem (that is not obvious until after purchase) for those who are Makita 'everything' (like me)!"

You can get the lxt at screwfix for £99 with one battery. Its a great bit of kit. If the other one really has different batteries I'd avoid it just for future proofing.
