Ok, the old question i guess but i'm interested in opinions before i spend some serious lolly.....

I'm about to change jobs back to the building/construction trade, building maintainance for a local authority and want to get myself a combo pack of 18v Li Ion cordless tools.

So, opinons on the (been around awhile) Makita LXT600
http://www.tools4trade.com/d-364407...m-ion-combi-6-piece-kit-with-3-batteries.aspx

Or the (apparently newly updated) DeWalt DCK 692L3
http://www.toolstop.co.uk/dewalt-dc...ess-package-3-x-3ah-batteries-2-x-toug-p51132

Obviously Makita wins the first battle on price and by quite a way too, but is the DeWalt pack worth the extra £££££'s

Makita wins hands down over Dewalt.

I've had Dewalt for years and due to getting fed up their tools not lasting anywhere as long as they should do, I'm slowly changing over to Makita when the Dewalts break down, and so far have been very pleased with them.

Two votes for Makita then, i must admit my first thought was for Makita and the price difference makes it look that way too. I've been having trouble getting my head round the £160 odd difference for what looks like very similar kit.

My intention posting here was to test the water for the difference between the two makes, basically if i saw loads of people saying DeWalt all the way i'd have a reason to think about spending the extra £££££'s but so far that's not the case.

You will always get fans of both brands, deliberating will only add to the confusion.

I myself have the LXT600 kit. Also added to it. Good kit, robust and does the job without any fuss. And i don't have that constant nagging worry of not if, but when, will it breakdown.

Dewalt all the way!

Seriously though, its personal preference, i've had a mixture of tools in my time between bosch, makita and dewalt. When they wore out or got old i decided to go the makita route so went to speak with a specialist tool shop/dealer, they advised against makita, namely the li-ion as the battery technology was lagging compared to dewalt.

Anyway, had some demo's, drank tea, talked money and after sales and decided dewalt for me was the way to go and over the years have bulit up a pretty comprehensive tool kit. Up to now the only failure i've had with a dewalt tool was the trigger on the brad nailer fail, took it to them, they told me we would ring you once repaired, probably a day or 2, 2 hrs later it was fixed, picked it up and asked how much the bill was to be told 'no charge', dewalt warranty don't worry about it and the best thing was i didn't even buy the tool from them, this i got from jewsons a few years before as it was on offer, the tool shop didn't even ask for a receipt, now thats the service you want if a tool fails.

I won't recommened dewalt because that would be obvious and sound as though i'm dissing all other brands but i won't, go for a brand name from the big players, get a good deal and ask about after sales (who, when, where and how) when stuff goes wrong

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post an opinion/advice here. I'm still of the mind to go with the Makita kit, in the past i've used Makita alot and was always happy enough with it.

The newer DeWalt kit that i linked above looks pretty good but more money and in fairness the job i'll be doing wont require a cordless every 2 minutes, more once or twice a day

The Makita batteries ain't a problem. Unless of course your trying to chew through some serious stuff but ALL brands would then suffer the same fate.

It's something to do with the way they discharge, dewalt have a clever system within their batteries that stops them discharging beyond a critical point that would render a li-ion unable to be recharged beyond that point, like a memory, Makita were one of the first to release their li-ion batteries, dewalt held back till they supposedly perfected them, dewalt batteries will not let you go beyond that critical point, they just stop dead, this was a few years ago though so maybe Makita use the same system now

Oh Makita every time. Black & Decker(DeWalt) are toys & not for tradesmen.

I've had a bit of a re-think and now wonder if i might be better getting a 2 piece kit to start with and build up over time as i find which tools i need/use the most.

The best compromise i've found re price and modern spec equipment is the following DeWalt drill/impact driver...

http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dck235-c2-14-4v-xr-combi-drill-impact-driver-twin-pack/35109

I know the kit is 14.4v and not 18v, is this likely to be a problem...i'm guessing the 'universal charger' means it will charge any DeWalt Li Ion XR batteries...?

I wouldn't go for that. You can do light drilling with the 18v kit but you potentially limit yourself by going for the 14V option first if more robust grunt is needed..
This is not to say the 10/12/14V kit is not worth having but it will and does have its limitations.

I've just sold my DeWalt 18V kit and bought a Makita LXT202 kit and superb it is too!

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice, i've now taken delivery of my kit which i got here,

http://www.my-tool-shed.co.uk/p1012...gle&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=DeWalt20

I was torn between the DeWalt and Makita, the 2 things that swung it was DeWalt's 3 year warrenty and their Tough System Tool Box...in fairness to both i doubt there is a cig paper between them in performance.

If Makita had the confidence to offer a 3 year warrenty i'd have probably gone with that, simply because i've used more Makita in the past, that said i'm happy with DeWalt and will start adding naked units as the need for them happens.

Thanks again guys....
