cant tell you about the gears and chucks but at a guess id say they were all metal.... at least all the drills iv had have been.

as for the makita vs hitachi subject, its 50/50, i asked about this a while back and went with the makita just for the simple fact batterys etc are easyer to get for a decent price.

cheers,
Phil

if were honest metal or plastic gears dosnt realy matter as a diyer a tool that will last a trader for perhaps 6 years will last you as a diyer a lifetime

in general pro tools for a diyer dont give good value for money as they are so over engineered for the job

have you concidered ryobi they are 40% off the price off the big boys tools and can do 80% off the work
and like dewalt with ryobi the old and new tools fit the old and new batteries

there are over 30 tools that fit the the same batteries for the garden and home
