Can anyone tell me what the difference is between this twin drill pack : http://www.screwfix.com/p/hitachi-d...m_mmc=AffiliateWindow-_-DeepLink-_-Na-_-58258 at £149.99 and this : http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-1-...4-4v-combi-drill-10-8v-impact-driver-xr/43946 which is twice the money. Are Dewalt so much more superior than Hitachi or is there something radically different in the specs. that I haven't spotted ?

I am almost certainly going to buy one of the packs but I don't want to make a stupid mistake.

TIA.

i personally wouldn't buy a twin pack with 2 different voltages as you don't have any chance to use both tools whilst a battery charges

an impact driver is far superior to a drill driver

i would look for the dewalt cheaper and matched voltages

i would also check to see what other tools are available for hitch in case you want to expand your kit

hitch versus dewalt similar quality

Thanks Big-All.

Well I made a right pig's ear of that didn't I ? Totally different specs. and I thought they were the same. And I see your point re: different voltages for the De Walt. Whose bright idea was that then ?

I think I need a combi-drill as well as an impact driver with both having identical batteries. I don't fully understand what a drill driver is.

Still looking for advice. This drill buying business isn't easy is it ?

driver --hex drive low power for screwing
drill driver-- with a chuck tends to be a bit more power full but wont drill brick or masonary
hammer drill --as above but with hammer action for brick etc
impact driver---hex drive large to very large screws and bolts including decking but not generally used for drilling

depends on use are you diy
light trade
or full trade

I've been looking at this set:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dc...-twin-pack-combi-drill-impact-driver-xr/78457

Looks a pretty good deal to me, unless others can advise differently.

These have much better battery life if an impact driver isn't required:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-lxt232-18v-3ah-li-ion-twin-pack-combi-drill-drill-driver-lxt/37308

My nephew recently bought a Hitachi combi drill from Screwfix and returned it the next day to exchange for a Makita because it was useless.

Al, if you use the bosch multi construction bits in your drill driver you can drill masonry/brick without hammer. I use them for red rawl plugs, not as fast as sds but quicker than getting the sds out the van for one or two plugs.

drill drivers tend to be less powerful
have a look at the drilling spec for the drill driver and the hammer drill in wood and metal and an nm or mn rating plus the rotation speed

Thanks MH. But I can't decide if the batteries for the De Walt drill and impact driver set are the same. They do look slightly different in the images and I know that De Walt do a twin set with different batteries. The description isn't that great. If they are the same and I can use the two batteries both on the drill driver and on the impact driver then I think this set will do for me.

An impact driver might be a luxury for me but having had some considerable building works done recently the way the lads fired Spax screws into timber made me very envious.

Just out of curiosity, can someone tell me the difference between a comi-drill and a drill driver please ? I assume that a combi-drill has a hammer action.

yes hammer

if both in the set are the same voltage they will 100% fit

They do look different, but if you check the individual pictures beneath the main one you will see that the impact driver has the same battery as the combi drill fitted to it. This should mean that they will both fit either tool, as big-all stated. If they don't, I suppose you could always return them and say the images imply that the batteries fit either tool - Screwfix are usually pretty good with returns. :)

or go for this,
http://www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-gsb...-1-3ah-li-ion-combi-drill-impact-driver/65222

ive got the 2.6 ah versions and cannot fault them i bit.

Thanks Gregers. I think Screwfix could brush up on their sales techniques a bit. They don't say if it is a 2-speed drill although it looks as if there is a gear-changer on the top of it. Also a bit iffy about the 1.3Ah batteries but maybe higher capacity ones will fit. If they gave options for other batteries that would make sense to me.

i think the actual picture is 2 different battery pack sizes so assume one is say 1.5 ah and the other 2 ah or whatever
