What's the name of the rod that makes a door open smoothly?

What's the name of the rod thing that takes the weight of of your car boot (trunk) and causes it to open smoothly?

I have broken a similar rod on my Velux style roof window, but I don't know what to Google for a replacement.

Its like a black metal tube with a thiner silver rod that can be pushed in or pulled out under air pressure or something I think.

its a gas strut. go on the velux website and they do all the spares for them.
