where do I find a copy of the "building regulations"?

I'm wondering where I can find a copy of the official building regulations. I'm interested in understanding how much support a 6m RSJ needs each end, should I decide to rest it on the walls instead of on columns. The planning portal talks of 150mm each side, but I seem to remember something about 675mm either side.

150mm dimension probably comes from lintel specifications - pretty much all lintels specify a 150mm bearing as a cover-all situation. This isn't relevant to steel beams where the bearing needs to be specifically calculated. The 675mm dimension probably comes from table 14 - 'sizes of openings and recesses'. Approved document A. Again, not really relevant to steel beams where the openings and supports should be calculated.

But what it tells you is very strictly limited to conventional building within limits (older versions had even more information in). A 6m beam is well outside the scope of the Approved Documents and you will need a structural engineer.

A degree or diploma in civil engineering would be a good starting point.
I guess failing that you could read the Structural Masonry Designer's Manual and BS5628 or EC6.

You need to calculate it based on the load and the bearing capacity of the existing masonry, otherwise it's just guesswork...
Anyway, the 150mm bearing applies to lintels, and 675mm bearing would be completely impractical for a lintel...
