Where on earth is my roof aerial?

Direct cable pickup. Not that uncommon. Used to cause a pre-ghost image on some communal antenna systems in analogue days.
Not that reliable usually in the long term, so needs sorting.

18 miles is a bit far... I'm about 9 from Sandy Heath and room aerials work ok much of the time in the upstairs bedrooms... well one 'room aerial is a home-made wire dipole... :eek: But receiving location height can help with signal (RF field strength) levels.

I'd suggest for reliable reception doing the 'buzz out the wires' suggestion above to identify each room and then buy and install a loft aerial to connect to the distribution amplifier and feed all the wanted rooms for now... Sort out the relocation of points later from a known good/working system.

https://www.aerialsandtv.com/knowledge/aerials/loft-aerials has a lot of helpful information freely given by Justin, the owner. Consider buying from him as 'repayment' if it proves useful to you. {I have no connection to that business whatsoever, for the avoidance of any doubt.}

Use the freeview interference predictor https://www.freeview.co.uk/corporate/detailed-transmitter-information and http://www.wolfbane.net/ 's Digital TV Predictor for a very rough estimate of field strength. A very nearby shop/pub/school/church postcode will allow comment on the numbers you have so gain/loss calculations can be done.
