I dont know if you all know my background but I left college last year having completed my apprenticeship, im qualified to 16th edition with NVQ3, I havent yet done the 2391 but will attempt it soon, anyway:-

I dont believe in staying with the same company for long once you complete your apprenticeship I believe in making your own way in this world, I'd like to start working for myself at weekends etc and slowly build up a business.

I obviously need to register part p and yes I could join NICEIC or similar however I think NICEIC is a little too deep for me right now and I'd prefer to just register for part p, every time I google part p I only find courses, I assume I dont need a course as Im an electrician and I need to register to let the council know,

any tips on how I register?

Do you mean be a Domestic Installer?

I think so, I just want to legally be able to work in domestic dwellings, obviously Id need public liability as well, maybe some of you could post a few companies that you use, not sure how much the insurance will set me back yet

As you are 'qualified' all you need to do is register with a self-cert scheme such as NICEIC, pay their fees, and book an inspection.

They want to see one major and one minor job, examples of these would be a CU change and a new socket/outdoor light etc. They want £2 million PL insurance aswell.

Unfortunately the NICEIC website is down atm, otherwise I'd post an appropriate link.

ok thanks, I was hoping to stay away from NICEIC at the moment, simply because Im told there's a lot of paperwork etc and big headaches.

Im only talking about working on saturdays, I just need it to be legal

There is always going to be paperwork involved whichever scheme you chose to use - if you don't like filling in forms you shouldn't have trained to be a sparky :p

If you don't want to join one yet then just notify all the jobs that require it before starting, but you'll have a severe disadvantage due to the cost issues and the need for inspections at first fix before carrying on with 2nd fix - although some BCO's will take you qualifications into account and may be more lenient, but you will still have to pay their fees.

hmmm I dont really have a choice, I was wondering are there any part p leaflets around you can give a customer?

for example explaining electricians are bound by law to ensure the earthing is up to current standards, people just think im tryng to rip them off Im sure!

If it had pictures that would be even better, or maybe I'd have to make some

Apply to one of the approved DI scheme operators (nothing to deep about niceic they are fine), then get some jobs done for the assessment (not just minor works), unfortunately you'll have to pay the labc fees for notifiable work.
Use the eic downloadable from IEE or if you go for niceic they will send you their green certs to use.
As for the insurance shop around
Norwich union who I was with when I first started up were £290 ish just for PL.
Now with niceic insurance & pay £343 for PL / PI / EL.

thanks for the tip, I'll keep trying and hopefully I can print them off and everytime I go to a job I can explain and hand them a leaflet, will make it easier for everyone

As long as you're not employing anyone, you should be able to get PLI for under £100

and the final two full scope schemes are ELECSA and BSI

(Napit might not be much use to you atm, they IIRC insist on members having 2391)

Could you suggest where I could get a quote for this, it will be a partnership thats it no employee's

Try a local broker, they should be able to find a decent quote for you. They'll search for companies that specialise in this type of insurance.

An alternative (and probably the best) is to have a search on t'internet. Just type in 'public liability insurance' in Google and do a uk search.
