Im decorating the hall and landing and when it comes to flooring in the hall we're going to go wood flooring which I'll fit and the stairs will be carpeted but this will be done a carpet shop.

So would you lay the wood flooring first or have the stairs done first?
 
I suppose you're asking which job will make more mess and cause damage to the other.

Carpeting isn't usually messy work; most carpet laying is done after all the other work, including painting, is finished.
 
Wood floor first, so the expansion gap in front of the stairs will be 'covered' by doubled back carpet - which a carpet fitter normal does.
