The winter of discontent !
Working by candle light !
Going to pubs lit by candel light !
Offices lit by candel light !

No computers, No Mobiles.... the country still functioned, wouldn't now !

Kids not having Face book, texting.........they'd curl up and die !

I remember it - the birth rate went up.

The Three Day Week and the Winter of Discontent were actually two unrelated events. 3 day week was in 1973-4 and the Winter of Discontent was 1978-9.

Our local woolies used gas lights during the 3 day week and stayed open

Shop lights out,half the street lights too...made little difference to ordinary life.
Candles unobtainable so I bought packs of dripping from the butchers and threaded string through...worked a treat but stunk my digs out.
We managed..but nowadays without all this computer rubbish the shops and pubs couldn't trade,everything would come to a standstill.

Not a very sensible state to be in really.Should there be a natural disaster of some sort,without electricity thousands would die now, without fuel and water being pumped to their destination.Industrialised society would be in a helluva mess.

I remember a "Minder" episode where Arthur and Terry were discussing a shifty, workshy character called Shamy (played by Art Malik, if I recall).

Arthur - "When he heard about the three day week, he panicked. He thought it was compulsory!"

I remember it - my girlfriend @ the time had more energy from not grafting so many hours ( in a bottling factory) Any plumbers remember the Copper Shortage that came between 3 day and Winter of disco

I can remember the miners strike of 1972 that put the lights out. We had rolling power cuts as the generating board struggled to keep power supplied. One Wednesday afternoon at school, we were having a science lesson. The science block contained all of the incoming mains electricity for the whole school. Around 2 o clock three of us turned the power off. You could hear the cheers from the rest of the school. 10 minutes later, the whole school was sent home for the afternoon.
Mind you our class got a right *******ing the next day, but it was well worth it. Class 5a were the school hero's for weeks.

I remember 3 day week- was a real shock for me .WTF was all that about ?
Buggered if I was going to work a extra day for anyone .

3 day week was for council workers.

Seem to remember they shut down the tele half a hour earlier than normal I.e. at 10pm instead of 10.30 but alternated between BBC and ITV but as there wasn't any ITV where we lived just meant half hour less TV every other night.

For some strange reason we never had power cuts at our school.
They always happened when we got home at night. Though to be fair it was usually after 6 o'clock by which time we had had our tea and done our homework. And the teachers always seemed to know who had genuinely had a power cut just after 4 o'clock.
