Gladstone, sort of.
His Chancellor, Harcourt, brought in the first of the Death Duties which went on to prevent the rich passing all their vast estates on to their kids (oldest son usually) which was an awful system imho.
Gladstone didn't like it, though.

Lloyd George, again as Chancellor, brought in the Old Age Pension which was desperately needed. He was PM later.

Then before anyone accuses me of being a leftie, Thatcher for smashing stupid unions.

Sunak wasn't too bad, Truss was insane,

Britain is trillions of pounds in debt, and therefore the country is beholden to who we are borrowing from, i.e. the 'institutions'. This is not how to run a country, yet every modern PM continues it. Liz Truss was the only one who wanted to do something about it. She was absolutely right, but perhaps insane to think that she could.

Somebody mentioned Wilson, the Blair of his day. His government was really the start of the dismantling of stuffy old conservative Britain and the ending of the traditions that made us great. He gave us the permissive society and going broke whilst letting it all hang out; and of course, the abolition of the death penalty. After Wilson, every period of Conservative government was to be spent dealing with the fallout of Labour rule. After Blair, the Conservatives gave up trying and joined the 'let it all hang out' bandwagon/gravy train instead.

I sometimes wonder if an equivalent of the NHS was introduced in countries that don't have it e.g. the States, let's say for 5 years, and then US government said they were closing the service, how many citizens would be happy with that decision?

We're so lucky to have it, regardless of any challenges it faces.

Has anyone mentioned Callaghan?, there's plenty to admire him for but eventually he fell foul of the Unions who got greedy with their pay demands and so led to the 'winter of discontent' which finished him off and allowed Thatch to sweep into power.
