Nobody is disputing it was dangerous being a civilian seafarer during ww2. Nobody is suggesting they did no do vital work. It was also dangerous working in a hospital during the bombings, or simply being a Jew anywhere in mainland Europe.

The merchant navy is not part of the military- its that simple.

If you went to the good wood revival there are loads dressed up in military uniforms

Was Down there one year and there were a couple of blokes dressed in Luftwaffe uniforms

I totally agree. But they served our country. And I thank them all for that!

A friend of mine his father was a steward on the Norland North Sea ferry and it was commandeered by the military to take soldiers as a hospital ship. He was not classed as anyone in the military although he did a great job but he was still classed as a civilian that served his country. Great respect for all civillians who are non military that have served their country but not served in a military capacity.

In May 1941, "Emergency Work (Merchant Navy) Order, Notice No. M198" was passed by the British Parliament in recognition of the desperate situation facing Great Britain. Under this new order, a Merchant Navy Reserve Pool was established, which was to ensure that available seamen were allocated to ships which needed crew, it required seamen to continue to serve for the duration of the war,

Sounds a lot like military conscription in practice.

Air raid wardens. Fire service. Police and the coastguard are the same. Not classed as military people but did a heroic job. You do not have to be a vet to be a hero.

this is the modern "merchant navy". Professional seafarers from yachties to bulk tanker captains, marinaras to pilots.

Perhaps you aren't aware that yachties are required to have professional qualifications and commercial endorsements.
