I have read the link.

It says nothing about Jonathan Carley falsely claiming that he served in the armed forces.

He'd never been a Rear Admiral. He didn't win those medals.

But nothing to suggest he'd not actually been in the forces. In fact, at the time, it wouldn't have been unreasonable to wonder if he had, and that was where he learned how to convincingly stand at attention, march, and salute.

One could even concoct a theory that he had been in the Navy, but had left without reaching what he thought should have been his potential and that this was him acting out his fantasy. It would be a credible motive.

But on what did you base

Given that merchant seamen could in effect be conscripted, given that they went to sea and became targets of the German armed forces, and served on ships under Royal Navy direction, given that Royal Navy could move them to any ship, give them Royal Navy training, and use their services under the white ensign, I think it's a pretty fine distinction to say that they weren't undergoing military service.

But even if you do, for some reason, want to make their technical civilian status a matter of great significance, think about the context of a war in which 36,749 merchant seamen were lost to enemy action, 5,720 were taken prisoner and 4,707 were wounded.

And in that context, motorbiking describing the Merchant Navy as this

and characterising the organisation as this:

was disgusting.

This is the modern "Merchant Navy". There is nothing disgusting about civilians qualified to work at sea in a commercial capacity.

Nobody is questioning the role of people during World wars. But it suits your dishonest narrative to pretend otherwise.
