why is there string in the plaster?

does anyone know what this string like material is in my plasterwork?

Or to be more specific jute scrim.. used to reinforce plaster at joints corners etc.

It's definitely not old fashioned, and it definitely is the best scrim for ceiling board to wall joins, and many kinds of repair use. Terrific gear.
