Right then, the dotting and dabbing lads have lost my 3 core and earth wire inside a wall for me. The wall is quite thick as it is on the outside wall of a barn, so there is plenty of space for my cable to get lost in. How can I find my cable? I have tried my cable/stud finder on it, but it only goes to about 12mm deep. Someone mentined putting high frequency on it, but I don't know how to do that.

is it lost as in plastered over and cannot move or lost as in able to move behind plaster or summit?

i hope its not live. if it is near the surface in plaster, you could test the insulation to make sure there is no short, connect it to a source (making sure no1 is near to have an accident) and use a voltage detector

Another reason why 'tis a good idea, before installing any cables, to first put in place an infrastructure of conduit & boxes....

you need a cable toner / tracer..

or make holes in the wall and get them back to patch up.

Good point - surely they should have had the wit to leave access?
On the other hand, if it was my job I'd just have to look at the drawings and measure out where the cable was placed.
Smug git, me.

These gadgets are fairly useless if they're cheap. Bosch do a couple of useful ones, one is the DM10 (I think) which costs about £35 from Axminster Power Tools, and will work to better than 100mm. The other is a very expensive one at nearly £600!! but it does allow reliable tracing of plastic water pipes too.
