wireless slow

M

marsaday

We have just installed talk talk (mau not change yet as still have virgin).

The speed from the modem down a wired connection is 13 meg.

however we want to run it on wireless, but the speed drops down to 2.5-5 meg.

i bought a new netgear usb stick yesterday as my machine was running at a speed of 0.3 meg, so it has improved there already.

talk talk are sending a new "N" rated router next week.

Any ideas if this is normal. i understand you loose some speed going wireless, but not that much.

we are in a brick house and the router is in the bedroom on the same floor as my office (7m away.

You need to clarify your units. What is a 'meg'? Megabit, megabyte, mebibit, mebibyte...?

What ever unit they all promise. 10 meg , 20 meg. i am not sure, but our speed wired = 13, wireless = 5. Bit of a difference i think.

anyone help with this?

Ok, so megabit/s. That's a pretty average speed for 802.11g, then. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it short of switching to n.
