oh boy, oh boy!!!

no wonder it went bang, you have wired it totally wrong!!!

live supply to ONE side othe choke (magnetic ballast)
neutral to ONE side of the lampholder
second connection from choke (magnetic ballast) to other side of lampholder.

and fit a new lamp, because i think the one fitted will not work, and or you could have damaged the choke!!!

and change the fuse in the plug, (if you have a plug on that lead)

also
EARTH THE CHOKE!!!!!!

Connected in parallel, as you have in your piccie, the only thing the ballast will do is regulate the current through itself. The ballast would need to be in series with the lamp to regulate the current it draws.

Many Thanks.
I am new to this so please excuse.

To fix the problem before doing any real wiring I am suggesting the following:

Currently it is wired like this:

My suggestion based on your comments would be like this:

The following diagram is from the instructions (unfortunately I only found this document after the original wiring)

Finally - my lead does not come with an earth wire - how would I earth the choke otherwise.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Tridonic chokes have marked terminals

L = supply in
Lamp= output to lamp

The earth would be fitted using a Lug and nut bolt and washers to one of the spare Holes in the choke
