Guys,

Was hoping I could replace a bathroom fan, but I'm not sure how to connect up, see attached pictures. In the first pic of the old fan there is a bare wire behind the blue wire but it's not connected to anything. This fan hasn't worked since I bought the house a couple years ago, there is a separate switch for this on the outside of the bathroom, I'm presuming it's connected to the bathroom light as it's just a timer version. Think I may have to bite the bullet and get a sparky in though!

From what you say I would advise the electrician route.

It looks obvious from here but you can never tell what people have done before.

You will have got instructions with the new fan and did you record the connections to the old fan?

There is also the matter of cable entry position into the new fan and a problem if it is not long enough.

Do you have any test equipment - a multimeter?

Connection to the old is Blue to BL, Brown to Br and Yellow changes to White to HM on the old circuit board. There is only one cable connected to the old fan. I have a multimeter.

Ok.

Probably
Brown is permanent live
Blue is Neutral
Yellow is switched live.

As the old fan never worked it would be best to confirm this before fitting the new.

Oh, the cut wire is the CPC (earth wire) which is not required although it should not have been cut.
