Hello,

I need to run electrical services in my new single storey extension and had a few questions if anyone would be good enough to look at.

1. Its an 'L' shaped building with the DB roughly at the point where the two arms of the building meet. Would it be sensible to run two lighting circuits and two sockets circuits, one up each arm if I physically have the space around/in the fuse board?
I think this may reduce the amount of cabling in the loft space.

2. Is there any preference nowadays as to 'Junction' or 'Loop In' circuits for the lights?

3. Someone mentioned I would need 'Switch Wire' with two reds for light switches. Is this a requirement with the current cable colouring etc?

4. I have basic in-line extractor fans to wire in. Should these be on the Lighting or Socket circuit?
(Both circuits need to run in the loft space and drop down due to Flood Risk/EA rules), So no difference to cabling.

5. A heated towel rail is presumably on the sockets?

Thanks for looking

What did you tell Building Control would be the way you would ensure that the electrical work would comply with Part P?

If you said, by copying words from their website, or if you allowed whoever drew up the Building Regulations application to say, or if by default you allowed the council to assume, that it would be done by an electrician then you now have no choice - you must use an electrician.

If your plan is to DIY and then get an electrician to "sign it off" that won't work either.

The questions you are asking do not paint a picture of someone who is competent to design, install, and test new circuits.

You cannot acquire the necessary competence by asking whatever random questions happen to occur to you. You've already shown that you have no knowledge of some very basic things - what if you get something wrong because you have no idea your knowledge is wrong? What if you miss something because you simply have no idea it even exists, and just don't realise you don't know it?

There's no reason to think you could not become competent, but I can assure you that you need to learn far more than you think you do right now, so unless you want a big delay in getting your extension finished you really do need to get an electrician.
