Hi

The boiler has an intermittent fault when firing, sometimes it will start on the timer no problem and other times I need to give the side of the boiler a gentle thump to get it to kick in.

I am a qualified spark but boilers aren't my speciality but don't mind investigating just looking for a few pointers to save a bit of time, when I thump the boiler the (panel is on and timer is on) I can here the pump kick in then it fires shortly afterwards my thoughts are possible relay maybe loose wire but I have already given the boiler the loose wire check.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Could be as simple as a loose plug connection from the burner lead to the control panel. They are notoriously prone to breaking and need to be pushed firmly home. Otherwise, could be a faulty on the pcb. Try thumping it whilst it is running to see if you can make it stop.

Ok thanks for the pointers, have checked the burner plug that is ok not fully checked the motor yet, but once it fires up it works ok on the thermostat starting and stoping in that period that I have set it to be on, it's the initial start up that seams to cause the most problems.

If you can be there when the burner is trying to start - maybe first thing in the morning?
If you can hear just a hum rather than the motor spinning, give the motor a thump with a hammer shaft or whatever and see what happens.
John :)
