Worcester bosch heatslave 12/14 plate exchanger..

hello all.

has anyone changed the heat plate exchanger on the above boiler?

if so, how easy or hard is it?

i have top access but the boiler is quite close to a wall on the left.

also, where can i get one from?

The HE is a bit of a pain to get out, you will have to remove much of the interconnecting pipe work, and the cold main C/W flow switch, it is accessible from the top however

I had the cold main and flow switch out today to check it wasn't the filter blocked, so I got that far!

It was the heating flow pipes I was worried about as it doesn't look like they will have much 'give' and allow me to get it out.

Typical.. I'm only supposed to be doing the bathroom..!

Ok, I have an idea.

To save me taking it out and replacing it...

As the hot water from the tap gets hot but is only a trickle and the fact it's got no inline scale inhibitor, I'm pretty confident it's only the mains side which is blocked with scale.

So, what if I suck out the water from the HE mains side with a wet vac, fill it with something to break down the scale? And leave it for a few hrs...days?

What would I use and do you reckon it would work?

In my experience, descaling HE's in situ is a no-no, the HE would need to come out and be linked to a flushing pump or powerflush, Fernox DS3 is a powerfull cleanser, but it wont work by pouring into the plate in situ

Don't worry about the 22mm htg pipes, once you have undone the unions, the plate will slide out from underthem, if you slide the control panel forward on it's rail there is enough room to jiggle the plate out
I forgot to mention thaqt you will need 1/2" & 3/4" fibre washers when replacing the plate

Do I need fibre washers, or are rubber ones ok?

As I already have those!

I would descale a plate HE in situ but I dont advise it for anyone who has not had a lot of experience.

I used to train my trainees if I thought they were bright enough but generally its not to be recommended.

Avoid Rubber washers like the plague they will leak - how do you think Warmflow got their reputation!!

Fibre ones are what is needed, as per original spec for your boiler
