I bought a huge set of drills (bits) recently. Some of the twist drills are plated yellow. they are definitely not TCT masonry drills as they have no rectangular plate brazed into the end.

The packaging says "nn HSS Twist drills and nn Titanium Plated HSS twist drills"

1) I have handled titanium and it is dull grey not yellow

2) What benefit is there supposed to be in plating the drills?

Reduced friction when drilling?

Aids heat dispersal?

Its usually described as TiN coated which I think is Titanium Nitride, as has been said its supposed to increase cutting speeds & give longer tool life.

Your nn coating is probably just gold paint if they were a cheap set ;)
