Whilst busy cooking, and alone, a knocks comes to front door, the other side of the house. I never open the front door, to anyone unexpected - rather I open the bay window. Young lad there, wearing an ID lanyard says 'I'm a young offender.....', I respond with my default 'No thanks', close the window, and back to my cooking. I wonder now, just what he was wanting?

If he didn’t have a bulging rucksack full of dusters and tea tower was probably looking to do some odd jobs. He can then tell the dss that he can’t find work because no one wants to employ a criminal.

The time I had one of those at my door, which was a good few years ago, he got quite verbally nasty because I said no thanks. I told him I would call the police if he did not go away. He then proceeded to knock quite loudly on the door which I had closed at that point. But he did go away eventually . This was back in the time when if you called the police they would actually do something.

perhaps next time wait until he told you  Its a known scam btw. "Nottingham Knockers"

It's the old catch 22 thing. They were maybe a reasonably decent, on the way to being rehabilitated, ex offender looking to rebuild their life through whatever initiative.

However, such is today's world, you likely did the right thing saying no thanks, although I agree maybe let them get a bit more of their spiel out first.

There is no reason for them to tell you and if the offence is rehabilitated, they have a right not to disclose, even if asked by an employer.

If ever REALLY bothered or frightened, and the cops say they can't get there, tell them about grandad's Webley. They will be there sharpish.

When they say, "You said you had a gun!"

You say, "You said there was nobody to send!".

SORTED.

I doubt he's been labelled out of choice - who would decide to do this for himself? He must have been told to do it.

Try ringing your local probation service, ask if they're arranging this.

I've decided to check the security camera recording.

On checking the recording, there were apparently two. One came coloured lad sauntered in, with a large rucksack on his back, got no response, maybe didn't knock loud enough - he was followed ten minutes later by a white lad, with no rucksack, whom I heard knock, and he was alert enough, to press the doorbell. I spoke to him, via the window. I saw the latter go in next doors gate, and come out a few minutes later, so they obviously fell for the tale. Both passed from my left, to the right.

A few minutes later, I saw the coloured lad back at my gates, waving to someone, back down the road, and obviously chatting to someone to my left along the road. I would guess that was someone in a van, running them around, to do their begging.

I once bought some rubber gloves and an ironing board cover from one of them, |I| felt a bit sorry for him as he said he was out of prison so I bought them. He was. really polite and appreciative that I had bought something. Never seen him since so I assume he must be back in prison.

I think it's above board, if they were up to no good they'd come up with a better story than that - to make you more and not less likely to trust them.

Probation will tell you if they're organising it.

what amazes me is the number of my neighbours constantly having their drives done and have over ordered tarmac. I am always getting kind, young, slightly chubby, vest wearing men offering to give me a great deal so they don't have to throw the materials away. its always just around the corner too, so it must be the same neighbour constantly getting his drive done. It's odd, because none of my neighbours have tarmac drives.
