It's dependent on which denomination you join. You do not become indisputably Jewish, but you might be accepted by some denominations.
Whereas Jewish by lineage is indisputable.

It wouldn't be acceptable by Orthodox Jews for sure, most Israelis accept converts as Jews, I have several friends who married Israeli girls although they converted to Judaism first at the parents insistence.

I don't think that is right. Zionists are not a protected group. There has to be another reason.

Winston Churchill was a committed Zionist for much of his political career.
