<originally in the How to manually flush a heating system with mains water topic>

I believe (working from memory) that the Water Regs discourage, or even prohibit, dispensing the contents of a heating system into the public sewer.

What else can one do with it? I can't believe you're right because there simply isn't any feasible alternative, and that applies equally to any form of draining or flushing.
Er, regarding you not believing in feasible alternatives, my comment was supposed to be helpful. The ones that spring to mind are:

1. Empty onto the nearest lawn or flower bed.
2. Remove in containers and take to a commercial waste disposal site.

I believe that heating system primary water is in DETR Fluid Category 3 ("slight health hazard"). Any more than that I would need to look up, and can't do that until later on.

I just can't see many customers accepting 1. and as for 2. ...you can't be serious.

chrishutt...we all do it...
havent u seen the plumbers queueing at the tip to dispose of commercial waste water from customers ch. !?

Fair play - the second wasn't serious. But the first one - that's what I always do! But I'm generally rural - do you generally work in an inner city?

Yeh, often in flats too. What gardens there are are mostly tarted up with decking, shingle and stonework, so a load of black oxide sludge would be about as welcome as the Beaufort Hunt.

That makes sense then - you don't have a lot of choice:cool:

I couldn't find anything that led me to understand why I thought there was discouragement. So I called my sewerage authority - they didn't know either, and are going to call me back!

new regs will shortly specify not to use the wc after a night on the beer and a curry.
Well, yes, I deserve that one.

OK - now I have an answer from my local sewerage authority, as follows.

1. It's OK to put fluid category 3 'water' down the foul sewer (i.e. toilet).
This is because it will go to a treatment works, and contaminants will be removed.

2. It's not OK to put fluid category 3 'water' into a surface drain.
This is because it will might return to a local water course, which do things like support local ponds and wildlife.

For the above reasons, it's recommended NOT to put central heating water onto a lawn or garden.

That's told me then.
