I've been telling him that for the past few hours but he is not listening.Yes, I know, so connect the L and SL to the slave at the landing.

And I haven't a clue why he is insisting on introducing a JB into the circuit.

Is this what you propose ? Done a re-sketch I do appoligise for not listening before I am new to all this and do want to learn from what your saying
It does. It's the same wire.Looks to me like the load has to come from the downstairs master though :/
NO You need
Landing light. Landing master. Downstairs slave.
3 core cable (+earth) from master to slave.
EXACTLY as the drawing in the Varilight installation instructions.

OK, so 2 gang master downstairs, and a 1 gang slave upstairs?
That will work, as mentioned a few times above, the load and the live can be at either end - assuming the same lighting circuit is used.
EDITED
As for the junction box - you may be better with something like this:
Given the problems you have had trying to decipher a relatively straight forward two way lighting circuit, do you really want to start messing about that multi-wired (possibly ten or eleven cables) junction box. What are these called mate and where does the power from fuse box go into that it don't show does it ? Do screwfix/toolstation sell them ? Thanks
