Hi everyone, i don't know how possible it is but does anyone think it'd be an idea to have a topic for Planning and Building Regulation queries. Some seem to be posted under 'your projects' and some under 'Building' but would it be an idea to group them together?

Wouldn’t be a bad idea & I’m sure I’ve seen it on one of the other forums but can’t remember which; it would certainly make it easier to post specific queries like mine!

One thing I’ve found, especially with BR’s, is that a lot of this stuff only surfaces as a result of “how/can I do this” type questions, usually because the OP is blissfully unaware what they are doing is governed by any legislation at all. I usually try to enlighten & sometimes feel I’m on some sort of personal crusade but it often seems to get misinterpreted. A few are grateful & seek further advice but many don’t respond well if at all when it’s pointed out to them that what they are doing contravenes regulations &, in some cases, the law!

I think this is generally a problem with the system in this country (i'm not saying that its better elsewhere because i don't know) but too many people just aren't aware of the scope that BRs covers. If i wasn't in the industry i wouldn't know some of the things that are covered. As a 'lay-man' you hear the words Building Regulations and you think thats for when you're getting a builder in, but people don't realise that a lot of DIY is also covered by BR. My father-in-law has been doing bits and bobs of electrical work around his house all his life and if it wasn't for the fact i married his daughter he'd probably not know that he cannot do some of these things any more without contacting the local BC office.

I think your one-man crusade is a worthwhile cause!!

I'm sorry i've just re-read my original post and realise how sexist it seems. I didn't mean 'Hi Guys' to refer just to men but realise that maybe it does. Editing on its way!

Thought “Guys” was regarded as non-generic these days?

Jeez, will the apologistas stop at no inadvertent reference that might offend, these days?
