Trick-or-treat boy killed in US
A 12-year-old has been shot dead while trick-or-treating with his family in the US state of South Carolina.

The boy's father and brother were also wounded by gunfire, police said.

The shooting occurred in Sumter at about 2030 (0030 GMT) when the family approached a house and a man fired on them from inside the property.

A 22-year-old suspect, Quentin Patrick, is in custody, charged with murder and assault and battery with intent to kill, prison officials said.

'Tragic evening'

As the family stood at the door of the house, they heard what they thought were fireworks, Sumter police chief Patty Patterson said.

The 12-year-old, his father and one of his three brothers were hit by bullets. The boy died in hospital, while his relatives' injuries were non-life-threatening, officials said.

"The investigation is continuing into what has been a very tragic evening," Ms Patterson was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

"Our sorrow and sympathy goes out to this family."

She said there were other people inside the house at the time of the incident, but she did not expect any of them to be charged.

A neighbour said he had heard a loud noise but had dismissed it as Halloween mischief.
