Can someone tell me how you should go about cutting the seals on the cut-out main fuse to change a mains board. Do you cut it yourself then arrange for it to be re-sealed or do you have to have the 'meb' come out cut it then come out again to seal it??? Also does anyone know the cost of such service??

Thanks!

Most sparks would just break the seal and inform the DNO/supplier retrospectively. This is the norm but it doesn't mean it makes it legal. Inform your supplier first and get them to fit an Isolator between the meter and old fuseboard. That way you will never have to bother them again. It should be free.

Depends on suppliers at a guess. I first went to my DNO, WPD who wanted £45 for my troubles so I told them where to shuv it. I then rang my supplier nPower who said no problem and they will get it done FOC.

And possibly a BIG fine for tampering with their equipment.

I worked as a meter fitter for a few years and we were always told to look out for people who by-pass the meter or tamper with it. If a seal was cut or missing and you could see that recent work had been carried out on the DB or tails it was never a problem and nothing was ever done about it.
Technically you shouldn't cut it off but no one will ever be bothered providing you don't by-pass the meter.
I have seals - any one want some?

And somebody to squeeze them together :?:

What we are getting at is that changing a Consumer Unit (main board, fuse box or whatever) is not the simple job that many DIYers think it is, and that someone who does not know the requirements for pulling the service fuse is very unlikely to have the knowledge or test equipment needed to do this job correctly and safely.

Therefore we will doubtless recommend that you employ a professional to do this work, and as this work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, that the professional be a member of a Part P Competent Persons Scheme which will enable him to self-certify the compliance with the Building Regs rather than involve the LABC, which would cost anything from £100 to £350 (my LABC and they insist on me providing the EIC! )

I will be changing the c.u,but what i was trying to find out is the correct method of going about cutting the seals and now i know! Thanks guys
