Daily Telegraph Expert says homeowners can fit own boilers

So can I fit my boiler or not?

And whats that u tube thingy for?

 ;) ;)

A lack of competence would equally be demonstrated by holding an ACS and having made a mess of gas work like an explosion, CO poisoning or a gas leak.

I dont think that is the case.

He is deemed competent just BECAUSE he has passed the assessment!

If he then goes on to make a "mistake" then he is in a better position than anyone who made the mistake without holding the certificate of competence.

The first situation is that of being classed as competent but making a mistake.

The second is of someone who was never competent and not only did he make the mistake but he undertook gas work when he was NOT competent.

Matt don`t bother with the U thingy just do a puff test...

Next bit of research for yous to do is it a legal requirement to notify(if so which appliances) or is it something the registered bodies made it a requirement of being in there gang.

As far as I can establish, its required to notify Building Control when a gas appliance WITH A FLUE is installed.

That would therefore let out one of the most dangerous of applicances which is the flueless fires ( which killed a 14 y.o. girl and her dog! ).

The person who fitted that fire, I believe was registered installer who was qualified to fit boilers (OF version inclusive). Just because someone shifted the goalpost to have two categories of flued appliances (namely boiler and fires), I fail to see what the operational difference is or where the testing procedures differ between the appliances during installation and commissioning. As far as I can see, this chap was guilty of not checking the gas rate that was supposedly set by the manufacturers and sealed against tempering. I may be missing some vital information but above is what I have taken on board.

Him being the last person in the chain makes him guilty and so is bunged up. This RGI now languishing behind bars has been a wake up call for a lot of RGIs who no longer fit flueless fires. I vaguely recall the makers had pulled all the relevant info off the web during the prosecution stage.

Just once, a couple of years ago, I went somewhere by tube and had rather more to drink that would be permissible for driving. However, I had taken my car and parked near the tube station and drove it home afterwards. As I drove extra carefully and had no accidents or incidents and arrived home safely so nothing happened.

Tony you are not serious when you write above. I wonder what your reaction would be if someone else did what you have penned above. Are you saying you drove at 5 MPH in 30 MPH speed zone to compensate for loss of reflexes to allow you to drive with extra care?

Ahem.............If someone can use a manometer, which I intend to give instructions on fully and where to buy one soon they can ensure that they have not left a gas leak coupled with the ability to spray leak detection fluid on any disturbed gas joints should make most people doing DIY gas work competent enough to know they have not left a leak. It`s ridiculously simple and makes most posts on here from Gas fitters screaming about competence laughable.

I am not advocating that anyone should undertake DIY gas work or any form of gas work, but if people are gonna do it, which they are, it makes more sense to advise them how to do simple gas jobs safely, instead of refusing outright someone who you know from their post is going to do it anyway. I`m not talking about installing full gas carcasses and suchlike but if posters on here realised how ridiculously simple it is to test for a gas leak, I think that there would be one or two red faces on here.

Watch this space. ;)

Go on then legion give us the full procedure for soundness tests using gas and using air and give us permissable drops on both

This advise is going to save me money - no need for books nor courses nor jack-all. Can't wait.

I doubt it, after all he cant ask those 4 gas fitters he has just laid off ;)

Driving a car is very simple, you just turn the wheel in the direction you wnat to go and push one pedal to make it go faseter and the other to make it go slower.

Based on the Legion advice its so simple you can just go and do it without any training or tests as long as you dont get caught or do anything wrong.

I still think that gas is best only touched by trained people and thats its wrong to advise the publ ic to do it. I still think thats the majority view!

And, although not an RGI, I still think that between the regs and HSE, it is not legal for anyone not "competent" to do so.

In Principle here here.

I've bought my manometer, removed the meter and bridged the two pipes connected to it with the mano (was a bit hard to stretch those rubber tubes over, but managed it in the end with a bit of masking tape to hold them). Have also bought and squirted a load of gas detection spray over my boiler and hob, fires and all joints.

Could do with the instructions on what I'm meant to do now to check that all is safe and leak free!

Think I'll light a cigarette while I wait

masking tape? you fool, surely hose clips are the required fixing?
