Silly mistake - i could shoot myself!

ordered downlights, got specific shower ones, and bathroom ones, then some regular ones for the lobby.

i wasnt paying attention when i checked the sizes and cut big 78mm holes in the lobby roof for the downights, which is the size of the bathroom ones... (more expensive or id just ask to exchange the lobby ones for the same kind) there are converters you can buy for downlights to fit bigger holes but there really big and also expensive..

i was supposed to cut a 60mm hole, which means its 18mm too big.. i checked with the size of the overlapping lip, and they can possibly still go in JUST without leaving any hole visible, but im worried about how secure they will be..

what do you suggest?

There is a fire retardent version!!!!!!! but begger me it will take some shaping!!!!!

Cut out a section of the ceiling, reboard and skim!!! Then cut the right size hole!!

It will never look right - you will see a halo of light round the rim when the light is on.

I suggest you look for a downlight that needs a hole near 78mm and exchange them.

what do you suggest?

Bite the bullet, change them for fittings that fit the aperture, then chalk it down to experience, chanting to yourself,

"MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE......."

the "tilt" ones are usually 74mm aren't they? ..
I wouldn't foam the hole up though.. bad idea...

best option has been given.. fill in the hole and re-drill..

if youhave the hole left that you cut out, you sould drill the right size hole in the middle of it and gripfill it in and polyfilla the saw line up..

dont have the left over holes no.. not keen on trying to fill the holes atall really. i think my two options from all your advice are buy lights the same as the bathroom ones, or perhaps that tilt fitting? as do they not allow for a few mm exra in your hole size (idiot proofing) and yes i know im an idiot :)

Could always cut some 60mm holes, surrounded 78mm holes in some plasterboard, then as suggested above. Probably not very strong though. If you can get access above, then guaze replaster, recut, or as suggested, lights that fit.

And of course measure twice or even three or four times depending on OCD levels, cut once. :D

Easy :D

Was the feline inspector pleased with the work..

Should be because it is a good job done well, I assume he is still not above the ceiling ?

But I would have cut the new hole in comfort on the bench before fitting the patch into the ceiling.

It's more arkward to get a good plaster finish if the hole is already in.
