Being doing a bit of research and checked various websites out there. Finally I used a Wickes .pdf to calculate that our spare spare bedroom(2.4x2.1x2.4) needs a rad of around 1950 BTU so I picked up one today with a 2000BTU rating. The thing is this website says more like 2400:- http://www.radcalcs.com/. I am wondering if I got too small a rad our they are simply trying to encourage folk to buy bigger rads $$$?

It is, if you know precisely how the house has been constructed and the exact materials used.
Without doing a detailed heatloss calculation you need a quick and dirty method.
Presumably you have rads in other bedrooms. If they give off sufficient heat, you could use a simple calculation:
New rad = Existing rad x (New room volume / Existing room volume)
I know its crude, but both the Wickes and Radcalcs methods are crude, if not cruder than mine.
There are too many unknown factors to make rad calculation accurate; a large part is based on assumptions and averages.
If you want to be sure a room heats up quickly even when it is really cols, spend a little bit more and buy one that is bigger.
