been to a warm air unit which is having major problems.

Flames are licking out of the front of the unit, smoke bomb spills massively.

Cleaned the burner and checked the burner pressure and all fine.

I'm thinking it must be a blocked flue but can't see the whole flue to check this. Could it be anything other than a blocked flue?

(posted here in the hope that simond see this)

Unlikely to be a split HE as that would not affect the flue function.

Its almost certainly a seriously faulty flue and many go to ridge terminals and parts in the loft come away.

I hope you are registered for WAU. I was wondering if I should take that assessment but in reality at the moment I get so few calls about WAU it would only be worthwhile if I got a few new leads through Gas safe.

yeah i'm registered for them - there are quite a few round here

I've looked at the terminal which is fine. Unfortunately I can't see down the whole flue internally as it has a dog leg in it about 2 metres down from the top. It also goes through two other flats which means I can't inspect the flue externally - the flue runs behind the WAUs in these flats and there doesnt seem to have been any work done in them to damage the flue.

Yes, but if its a ridge terminal have you inspected the connection between the ceiling and the ridge where they are most likely to come apart?

I am assuming that its not all sooted up within the WAU ?

Tony

it terminates through a flat roof - I've inspected all of the flue that i can including looking down it

No obvious signs of sooting.

Time to lower a heavy ball on the end of fishing line?

Have you been able to inspect/smoke test the flue AFTER the WAU in case thats blocked inside?

How many WAU jobs do you do in a typical year? How do you get these jobs?

Tony

not been able to test after the appliance yet. Going back to it later in the week

I don't do a huge amount of warm air. I quite like working on them though.

I get the jobs via advertising and word of mouth.

They want nearly £200 for the warm air ACS. I doubt that will be worth while for me if having it does not bring many new jobs through Gas safe.

Annoyingly at the J&S stand their over keen rep said they did WAU assessments but later when the training man came back he confirmed they did not!

Thats seems very short sighted to me not to!

I hope for christs sake you left it ID then until you do go back!!!!

you sure the heat exchanger is clear??
if you remove the burner&gv you should be able to get in close with a mirror and torch. Also you can stick a flue cleaning blade up the inside and see how far you get and what comes down.

I have to agree with this. The Heat ex must be partialy (if not fully blocked).

I use 2 hack saw blades that are jointed together (by a friend to can fabricate a long blade) to get right up in the heat ex.
