Hi Tony,
I have only just seen this thread as i havent been on here for a while.
Any way yesterday i installed a WC to my 42CDi combi, as i want to be able to set one up and use it to its best ability before i visit one of our customers that have had one installed. As you have mentioned you do need both the fw 100 and outside temp sensor.
I must say i had training on it ages ago but have forgot all that and to be honest the trainer wasnt that clued up on it either, so im intending on learning myself, there isnt many people in our company who are fully clued up on it as its quiet new technology to us Brits, hence a few of us are installing them in our homes to become familiar with it.
From what i understand after 1 day using it, ( the installation instructions are a direct translation from German and someone soon is going to sit down and re-write them in more simple terms) the fw 100 can either be mounted on the boiler facia or better still wall mounted as it can them monitor the room temp. If mounted on the facia it only works out the flow temp using the outside temp, if it is wall mounted it works out the flow temp uusing actual room temp and outside temp(apparently more efficent and better comfort).
you do need to set the parameters in the installers menu, by pressing the menu button for 3 seconds, my heating system has been designed with a max flow temp of 70 degs and an outside temp of -3degs, so i have entered this information on the fw100. It comes with it preset to -15degs and flow 0f 75degs.
one of my colleagues has had one in his house for a few months now and said there is a few complaints you could receive if you dont set it up to the individual system design.
1, set the heating flow temp to what the system is designed for otherwise it will never get warm enough in the property, mine is 70degs, older system were usually 80-83 degs. on my system it should be 70degs flow temp when the outside temp is -3degs
2, change the freezing risk outside to between 0 and -5 degs otherwise the pump will run continually(its preset to 3 degs) i put mine to -3degs
3, set the minimum outside temp to what the heating system was designed for mine is -3 degs, older systems were usually -1
4, customers usually find it hard to undestand the night set back or economy temp (preset to 15degs) if they want the heating completely off set it to frost protection (5degs)
5, the pump runs continually when the boiler is in comfort mode, something to do with load compensation, i havent got that far yet??
Its my first day using it and i find it hard not to want my programmable roomstat back, but im going to give a full heating season to try and pursuade myself to get use to the apparently increased efficency and comfort. It could be the future?? lol
I also havent read the manual fully yet, hope this helps a little, any other questions feel free to ask
