Since my old DVD burner is now spitting certain discs out at me, I reckon I need a new one.

It's a minefield though - I've hunted through reviews etc and have yet to find a glowing report on any of the new burners - everyone seems to point towards older models that are like hen's teeth!

I need an IDE connection, which I find is probably harder to source than SATA.

So far, recommended ones have been Optiarc AD-7200A, Pioneer DVR 115D and the Samsung SH-S202 - I've managed to locate the first two, but the Samsung is another story.

Other than these ones, does anyone have recommendations?

I can second the recommendation of the Pioneer. I've been using them without issues for years.

I think that Pioneer is a pretty old model - got told that the older ones are much better than the new ones (something to do with Litescribe).

Would you agree to stick with an older model if I can get one?

Just about any Pioneer should be fine. I've not used the current models with Labelflash, but I have everything from 110D to 215D.

If you've been specifically advised to get an older one (I'd love any concrete info on problems with the current models), I have a DVR-111DBK on my desk I have no need for.

Thanks for the link holmslaw. Unfortunately, it didn't do much. So I tried burning a disc on my laptop and it played fine - so it's pretty much a dead cert that my current desktop burner has had it's chips. It's been pretty intermittant recently on whether it burns discs or not and I've been blaming the discs!

Monkeh - am interested in your Pioneer - how much do you want for it? I don't know what it is about the newer drives that a lot of people don't like - maybe it's the Litescribe being more to go wrong with it?

You can read reviews on things till your head is spinning and your eyes are square, but often (as I've found) it just confuses you even more. Seems like computer parts are like food - the minute it has "new improved recipe" on it, you can guarantee it's gonna be horrible!!!

You sure that's all you want? Sounds fine to me. Can you find out how much postage is and let me know? How will I pay? Have you got PayPal?

And I think now we need to have a moments silence for my poor dead burner! :D
