What's The Best Free Anti-Virus?

Just use Microsoft Essentials add Malwarebytes and superantispyware, all free and you have all bases covered... I've not noticed any slowing down on my system using this freeware.

I'm recommending Avira antivir - the free version is fine. It comes top in independent detection tests and has a small resource footprint. It does have a popup on update offering the paid version but a quick google tells you how to stop that 
AVG has fallen behind of late - it's been known to miss infections and its resource footprint has grown to the extent that it does have an impact on performance.

AVG doesn't have a system overhead any more significant than a generic antivirus application provided you're running a system from the 21st century!
You don't need AVG commercial unless you need specific customisation of your antiviral scanning, the commercial AVG simply includes bloatware that is unnecessary. Nothing more than AVG Free, Spybot and a user with some logic/intelligence is required to keep a clean system.

Kaspersky Anti-virus 2010 is the best option for it. It protects from the malware, threats and unwanted files/folders. I am using it and there is no problem still. Also, it is easy to use and install.

Here are the various menus for Avira AV, each has a page or less of settings ...
I am sure system drag would occur with 'everything switched on'
Viewing the logs - ranging back to 2008, I have had 8 warnings all (proven) false positives except one whilst checking a laptop HDD (which had a non booting problem) - replaced the file (WinLogOn.exe) with a copy from another machine - All back running ok.

I ditched AVG for Avast when it let me down badly.
I'm happy with Avast but if I could (ie if I had legit windows) I would go for Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). You must have legit windows that will pass WGA to get MSE though.

Are you using a 64bit OS as this will restrict your choices.

Latest AV comparatives results suggest that Avast is the best and fastest free AV solution, and MSE is not as good as you'd think.
I use Avast with Comodo firewall plus defense+ with winpatrol, with OIBit security 360. The layered security route is the safest.

I've been using avast for many years now and I have to say it's far better than any of the paid antivirus programs I used before. Very easy to install and use and very reliable.

used AVG for a feq years then got a virus that it could not fix. Have installed AVAST which seems to work well on winXP and Win7 OS's.
Have installed on all my friends / family so about 8 PC's runnig it with no -Ve reports and it's free.

Except viruses still exist for Macs, and the more people who buy Macs, the more viruses there will be.
