We are trying to drill holes to put up a curtain pole using a hammer drill and it will not go in more than 1/2 of an inch, what are we doing wrong/what should we do?

you will be hitting the concrete lintel, (which shouldnt have holes in it  ) which spans the hole where the window goes to hold up the rest of the bricks

Rosieglow, Hi.

As previous post it is a concrete lintel, or? if you live in a fairly "Modern property" then the Lintel you are trying to bore in to "May be" a steel "Catnic" type of lintel?

if this is the case you are attempting to drill into a bit of sheet steel.

Have a look on the Web for "Catnic / Steel lintels" this will give an idea of what it looks like.

Some of these Lintels can be seen externally at the Lintel area as a metal plate supporting the outside [external] leaf of bricks.

Cheers.

Hi Ken, our house was built in 1919. The poles in another room have been fitted using wood which has been screwed to wall but to be honest this looks a bit rubbish,

hammer drill /what should we do?
Bin that toy and get an SDS drill ;) They are the ones that the drill bits plug in to . I don`t know why "hammer" drills are still sold - they are a relic of the 60`s

Spend some money on a decent masonry drill bit, rather than something cheap that will probably melt/self-destruct leaving bits of it in the hole forever.

Saying that it's not really the done thing to go putting holes in lintels. Hence why you see wood above windows to carry the curtains. Perhaps find a way of putting the wood up so it doesn't look quite so rubbish?

Once the masonary bit stops switch to a hss bit, check to see if this is hitting metal by removing and looking for metal swarf, if none then you have a concrete lintel and will need to glue a timber on to take screws.
