Actually it has only just dawned on me that the whole AM PM thing doesn't make sense.

5pm means 5 hours after midday, ie 17.00 hrs- fine

BUT

5 am means 5 hours before midday (ante meridiem) which would be 12.00hrs minus 5 which is 7.00hrs!!!!!!!

AM could only make sense if it stood for after midnight.

Back to the padded cell for me....

At least now I have an excuse for being late.

edit-------------------------

and when is 00.00hrs?

12am? 12.00-12.00=00.00hrs

or

12pm? 12.00+12.00=24.00hrs

I see your quandary... A quick google claims that "Media nox" is latin for midnight. So, ante media nox, or a.m.n could suffice to solve your problem.

On the pedantic front, I am ashamed to say I spotted the 17:00pm almost immediately!

When I was a spotty yoof in a shop, I had an irate customer demand to know why the packaging for a particular item said "12.5 inches", rather than "12 1/2 inches". He insisted you couldn't use decimal points in imperial measures, I wasn't inclined to argue but I'm pretty sure no-one ever bought one thinking 12.5 inches somehow means 18-foot... If he ever bought a satnav he'd have a fit each time it says 2.3 miles to the next junction, rather than 2 miles and 528 yards!

Thanks DM

but shouldn't that be post Media nox, pmn, err....giving us pmn and pm
