unbelievably frustrating this!

right just finished sorting the bathroom and went to connect the new light.

whipped out the old globe which had 2 connections with 3 wire going in.

light out left this

and tried to connect them to this

now after lots of swearing due to lack of space to connect them i got the wire in and went for the test run. power back on light switch pulled and nothing? mirror light still works,

landing light is also out but bedroom lights still work.

i presumed the black with the red end is the live and the black the neutral and the green and yellow eaeth so that's how it was connected?

can anyone shed any light on this...pun intended

Picture is not clear but you appear to have three reds or two reds and what you refer to as black with a red sleeve on it.

How many other black wires are there.

As other lights are not working I suspect there should be three cables, each with a red, a black and an earth.

All three reds join together in a terminal block but NOT the one on the lamp.

( these are live in, live onto the next ceiling rose and the live to the switch,

The two black wires without a red sleeve go to the neutral terminal on the lamp.

( these are neutral in and neutral onto the next ceiling rose )

The black wire with red sleeve will be the switched live coming from the switch and that goes to the live terminal on the lamp.

The fitting appears to be metal. It must be earthed, that is the most important thing in a bath room lamp.

With fittings like that it can help to use a suitable 4 terminal junction box to do the connections of the cables and have more flexible cable to the lamp terminals. The junction box can then be pushed above the ceiling.

It MUST be an enclosed junction box with cable clamps for the cables and NOT a bit of chocolate block wrapped in tape

to clarify:

3 reds going into a connector and nowt else.

3 blacks:

1 solid black
1 sleeved red
1 coming from the g&y

may have worked it out in my head but will await confirmation.

from the ceiling are 3 grey wires.

in each is a red and a black and a bare.

the 3 reds go into a connector.

2 blacks

1 black with a red sleeve.

now the 3 bare go into a uncut green and yellow....do i need to bring this into play?

so the live goes to the live, the blacks go to neutral and the newly found earth to the centre?

Wodge.... Get a four way terminal block 15Amp should be big enough.
In the first terminal put the three reds (live loop)
In the second terminal put the two blacks (neutral loop)
In the third terminal put the one black with the red sleeve (switch live)
In the fourth terminal put the three earth wires with sleeving.(earth loop)

Then use a piece of 1mm or 1.5mm T&E and connect the brown cable to the terminal block with the black cable with red sleeve and then to the lamp L.
Connect the blue cable to the terminal block with the two black cables and then to the lamp N.
Connect the earth wire (sleeved) to the terminal block with the earth and then to the Lamp marked earth.
Put the terminal block in a chocbox and push it into the ceiling void.

i presumed the black with the red end is the live and the black the neutral and the green and yellow eaeth so that's how it was connected?
So what did you do, at first, with all the other wires?

can anyone shed any light on this...pun intended
Reading up on how lighting circuits work beforehand would have saved you trouble: http://www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:lighting

Of course - the light has an earth terminal!
