Hi, we turned the heating on for the first time since summer and the pump is knocking, it has been noisy for a while. It is a Euramo Salmson Gold.

I took this picture because it looks like a bit of a bodge...like the whole of the heating in this 70's house! I guess the plumber on the estate was in a hurry...

In addition to the furred-up pump valves there is some filling piece in between the top service valve and the pump.

Do you think I'm best cutting the whole lot out and renewing the valves and extending the pipe to actually fit the pump while I'm on the tools? Of course I'd have to drain down for that.

THose Ball-o-fix pump valves will leak if you ty to close them the Gold pump will date form the mid 1980's, the original pump would have been an old unit which was much longer than the now industry standard 130mm
It is time to drain down, fit some new gate type pump valves after extendiong the pipe work to tidy it up

oh that explains the extension piece then. That must've been some big pump! My M&D had a new CH system in 1972 and they had a 'Selectos' or something which was the same size as that Gold...but painted blue.

The last pump I saw being installed, the plumber used bosswhite and hemp around the pump flanges. What's the best way nowadays? Is hemp still the correct way or can I use PTFE tape?

The new pump will be supplied with rubber washers just use these dry no extra jointing required, do not over-tighten the pump unions either they just need a "nip"

pipe jointing on the olives of the valves would be cursory

You would have never got him/her back to remove it, if it failed.

Silicone Grease on the Pump threads, rubber (not fibre) washers and as per the previous post, the smallest of 'nips' on the unions. You'll thank us if you ever have to change it in the future.

ok cheers. I've just peered at a picture of a pump connector and can see a red rubber washer. I guess our old plumber was an old school guy who applied sealing stuff to everything out of habit.
I am a spark by trade and can wire up anything in my sleep but the sight of a weeping compression fitting fills me with dread because of the mess it can make! Horses for courses I guess.

Its a vent relief valve, been on since I moved in 15 years ago. No idea if its required on a vented system but nontheless its got one!
