Is there any reason why an engineer would not freely supply a customer with his registration no.?

That is exactly what I'm worried about, He has got gas safe on his stationary, asked if he was before he started and then checked that he had completed all the safety checks according to gas safe regs etc.

He has now got snotty when I asked all paperwork for the gas work he did along with an invoice and his number to check his details on register before I pay him. I repeated that I would have the money in my hand when I asked for this.

Any explanation for his attitude other than the most obvious?

If you know his name and address or business name then put it in the gassafe register page to check an installer/company

You can check his registration on gassafe website with his name or cmpany name or post code.
I have to suspect that is either not registered or we are not be told the whole truth?
My advice ( too late in your case) is to check the persons badge and verify the number on the gas safe website before they do any work.
This way you are making sure they are qualified and registered for the type of work you want doing
Its seems to me that as well as people not been registered at all, a lot of people work 'out of scope' meaning working on or fitting gas aplliances they are not qualified to do.
Although only asked extremely rairly I would always be happy to show my card, but might have to go home and find it first

He is either
a) Not registered
b)Registered, but not in his own right, ie working for a big firm, for which he doesnt have the right to do his own work.

If you have his stationary, and probably his address, go on the gas safe website to see if he is there.

And if you have any problems, remind him the job isn't finished until the paperwork is completed.

Can you just clarify what paperwork he should be doing for me?

I presumed something to say he has moved the boiler so that any subsequent house sale/ current insurance would be ok.

He simply tells me to pay him and then he will do an invoice.

Genuinely disapointed in myself that I let him in the house without physically checking the card. Just took him on his word that stationary and asking him twice before and during the job was enough. etc.

Have checked on the gas safe register, his name, his company, his address,.........nothing.

Will another gas safe registered plumber come in a check his work or will it be a case of 'its not my work so I want to start again'.

Have checked on the gas safe register, his name, his company, his address,.........nothing.

Then he is acting illegally, pay him nothing and get a proper gas safe chap to check what he has done and do whatever needs to be done to ensure your system is safe. Then use the money to pay the proper chap.

Simples.

There's a benchmark logbook in the back of the Installation manual that should be filled in when he does the commissioning.

What boiler has he fitted.

sounds like a dodgy gas man. I'm sure you can buy gas Safe stickers on ebay

"We only supply our products to Gas Safe Registered Companies and all supplied Registration numbers are checked against the Gas Safe Register.

jbpm online ltd is a licensee of the Gas Safe Register logo"

I'm sure there are other vendors who cater for the dark side.

true, but i'm sure theres dodgy traders out there who would simply provide a fake number and then paint over this using black paint for a logo on a van etc.
