About to attempt to replace a dimmer switch for the first time I looked behind the old one to see the size of the box behind it. Having looked on line to see what wiring to expect I was surprised to see 3 red and white wires instead of the 2 red ones I was expecting. Will this affect the type of switch I buy and the way it's connected? I thought they'd all be the same.

There's not enough light to get a photo when I get home from work during the week so I'll take one on Saturday. Thanks for your reply.

Red and white. Perhaps a conduit system or even 50s cable.

Be sure to observe which wires go where before you remove them.

Not sure exactly what you have there, but it's likely the reds are permanent live and the white is switched live.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. There are the expected yellow/green and black wires, but instead of 2 red wires, there are three wires, all three of which are red and white.

Almost sounds like telephone wires - but it can't be can it?
What size are these red/white cables?
