We moved into a property on Friday, and can't find the fuses. From the left hand side there is:

A black box which says eon on it
A PME system 100a series 7
The meter
A small grey box with on/off multi9
A larger white box that says REVO and an on/off switch

Is a picture I've managed to take.

Also we were going to put a bar spotlight in the kitchen but the OH can't find an earth wire so we put the pendant back. Does this mean we need a re-wire? :(

Not the only problem we've since found including the electric shower that doesn't work ... I'm fed up 48hrs after moving!

Many thanks

Andi

The REVO switch looks to be a 60amp switch fuse feeding a submain to a fusebox sited elsewhere in the property.

Can you take some pics of the lighting point cables?

Have you had a look in the Revo box?
Regarding earth?CPC on lighting circuit, if you have no earth/CPC you do not need to re-wire, unless the circuit cabling is unsafe but you cannot use metallic fitting/accessories on this circuit, unless they are classified as double insulated. These type of fittings are normally quite tastily priced.

you must turn the Revo box to "off" before you open it. I don't know that brand, but often they cannot be opened in the "on" position.

If it was me I would trip the RCD to "off" first, but there is a risk that it will not turn on again, as the type with the quarter-rotating lever is rather old.

I think you need to start asking friends and neighbours if they know a recommended local electrician.

I see you have a white meter*, so you may have two "fuseboxes" with one of them running storage heaters. There should be a timeswitch somewhere too.

*edit
But I can only see one row of numbers in the meter window, so maybe I am wrong

Switch the 'multi9' off.
Switch the Revo box off, undo the small black screw on the front and remove the cover.
Probably find there are 4 ceramic fuses inside. Picture of the insides would help.

Either way, some updating will be required, unfortunately due to the age of that Revo effort it is likely a full rewire will be needed.

It's the Revo box. Take extra care if you do remove the cover. It looks like the shield that (probably) covers the main switch terminals is not fitted, as there is something that resembles this is tucked behind the grey cables.

the "multi9" RCD should trip to "off" if you press the black "T" or "Test" button (It might say "RCCB" on it but we call then RCDs now). It is not a DIY-replaceable part as it has live incoming cables which are almost unfused.

However, as I said, it is old, and might not switch back on again, especially if it has not been tested every quarter.

Does that switched fused spur in the very bottom left of the picture have a back box?

Your installation does seem very out of date, and a rewire or upgrade would be very beneficial before you do any decorating or fit any new flooring.

Get a recommended electrician to look it all over. Don't pick one out at random from the telephone directory.

Looks like an old TT installation hence the RCD is very important - can't see anything connected to the PME terminal.
As others have said, ideally you need an electrician to check it all out.

Hi
Thanks, the only place we haven't checked for fuses is the attic if that's a possibility. Will try and get a pic of the kitchen lighting wiring ASAP but OH has gone off to the old house for a few more things so may be tomorrow.

Thanks again

THE FUSES ARE IN THE REVO BOX!

Turning off the main switch(es) may prove easier and safer than trying to remove the cover. Test for dead before working on any of your wiring.

Bit more of an update, there are 4 ceramic fuses behind the REVO.

The house was built in the 1970s, and doesn't need re-decorating, it has no storage heaters.

Really not happy no mention of old electrics was made in the survey and surely that should have been obvious to a valuer/surveyor.

Thanks again

None of 'em know the first bloody thing about electricity beyond 'that switch makes it go'.

Another vorte for the fuses being in the Revo box. They won't/can't be anywhere else. What's the wiring like - the supply from the cut out fuse looks recent but you may still have rubber-insulated wiring elsewhere. get it all checked and soon.

Surveys are rubbish. Rubbish.

If you lighting circuit really doesn't have any earths in at all, then this would suggest your house was built before 1966.

Sometimes people would cut earth wires out of cables if there was no terminal to connect them, so you may be lucky.

Pictures of the lighting circuit would be very handy.
