hi
if i contructed a 2no 47mm x 100mm c16 with a 8mm x 100mm plate and bolted with 12mm bolts at 300mm staggered to form a flitch beam say at 3mts.. what size would a timber beam be at the same spec? all the load going to be is taking the weight of 4x2 at 600mm centers and corrugated sheets on garage roof..
anyone could answer this please..
many thanks..

Twice as deep?

BTW, you would never have the plate as deep as the timber, always less deep.

And no need to stagger bolts on a 100mm deep section

...and couple of feet of snow during a bad winter.

Much easier to just use timber joists, and if it is only carrying corrugated tin + snow load then you could use 50x150 C24, or 50x175 C16.

I take it you mean the span is 3.0m?

thanks for the replies
yes the span will be about 3mts as i will be taking a section of wall out so i need to have a minimum depth for the beam supporting the roof for head clearance ..
so now i will get 8mm by 90mm plate.to make up the flitch beam?..

Hang on, I think I might have misunderstood...

What is your flitch beam going to be carrying? Are you saying it is 3m long and carrying 4x2" joists which were previously supported by a wall?

If so, the most important factor is the span of the 4x2s. Are you even sure that your flitch beam is up to the job?

Ronny.. The span of the 4x2s will be 2mts long as they are sitting on the rear of garage wall where the garage been extended by 2mts and I need to open up the other wall where the 4x2 also sits on to created a 3mts opening..hope it make sense ..many thanks..

ok i try again...
the width of the old detatch garage is 4mts and 5mts long..at the rear of the garage wall which is 4mts wide , someone has built a bricked shed up against it on the outside..that shed goes along the whole width as the garage but goes 2mts away from the rear of the garage wall..the opening for the shed is on one side and when you go in the shed you got no excess to get into the garage ..that is where i want to put the opening into the rear of the garage wall...and brick up the shed door and the garage will be 7mts long..the garage roof rafters does not sit on the rear wall.. they span the whole width of the garage at 4mts.. but the shed roof rafters does and need to support them for the opening which will be 3mts ..the shed rafters are only 2mts long and spanning from the rear of garage wall to the shed wall which is opposite the garage rear wall

any better this time?
